Freezing drizzle on Friday afternoon left behind a thin sheet of ice that light snow - up to an inch - is expected to cover Friday night.

But the ice will still be there on Saturday, as temperatures stay below freezing for the day.

Roads became so slick so quickly on Friday afternoon that Iowa City briefly suspended its city bus service before the salt trucks came out and the buses resumed normal service, although delays were expected.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for most of Eastern Iowa on Friday, with icy roads reported throughout the area. Minor crashes were reported, though no reports of injuries were received.

The ice should melt by Sunday, with highs forecast near 40.

A larger storm system is expected to bring rain - or a mix of rain and snow - to Eastern Iowa late Sunday into Monday, New Year's Eve, the Weather Service said.

It will be colder on Tuesday, with 2019 starting off with highs in the teens and wind chills near zero, the Weather Service said.
