Freezing rain, snow moving in to the Corridor Wednesday

CEDAR RAPIDS - Here we go again.

The Cedar Rapids area will be under a winter weather advisory from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday as a wintry mix may move in later tonight, depositing an icy glaze before the morning commute and turning to wet snow later in the day.

The National Weather Service predicts conditions will be the worst north of Highway 30. Snowfall could be heavy at times in Northeast Iowa. And there could be scattered thunderstorms.

'Although severe weather is not expected, there will be cloud-to-ground lightning and some storms may produce small hail,” the forecast for tonight and early Wednesday said.

With the recent rainfall and snow, the Iowa and Cedar Rivers could rise later in the week, the weather service said. The Cedar River in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area continues to be under a flood advisory, but the weather service had not issued a flood advisory for other areas.

For the Cedar Rapids area, the forecast predicts rain, freezing rain and sleet before 9 a.m. Wednesday, then adding snow to the mix between about 9 and 10 a.m. After that, only snow.

The weather service said the chance of precipitation is 90 percent, and the high will be 36. Snow and sleet could accumulate to about 2 inches.

South of Interstate 80, there is no winter weather advisory and conditions Wednesday are expected to be less hazardous.

There is an 80 percent chance of precipitation in the Iowa City area, with a high near of 38. The weather service predicts snow and ice, but little or no accumulation.

The sun returns Thursday, with the forecast calling for highs in the upper 40s.
