Foul play not suspected in fatal incident at Swisher shooting range

UPDATE: No foul play is suspected in the death of a man found with a gunshot wound at a shooting range in Swisher on Sunday evening, Johnson County investigators announced Monday morning.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office was called at 4:54 Sunday to the Hawkeye Wildlife Shooting Range at 2248 Amana Road NW in Swisher about a person “having a medical emergency,” according to a news release. When deputies arrived, they found the man – later identified as Craig Lewis Utech, 51, of Tiffin – with a gunshot wound.

Utech was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff's Office. The investigation is ongoing, but foul play is not suspected at this time, sheriff's officers reported.

Law enforcement at the scene Sunday evening told a reporter that other people were present at the time of the incident, and those individuals are talking with authorities about what they witnessed.

Authorities haven't released details about whether the man shot himself or if someone else was involved.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Jefferson Monroe Fire Department, Linn County Area Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner.

The Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of death.
