A Dubuque County Sheriff's Department deputy who was shot during a traffic stop Tuesday near Cascade has been released from the hospital.
Sheriff Joe Kennedy said Tuesday afternoon that the deputy, whose name has not been released, was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday night. The deputy had been taken to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center and then to University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City for treatment. The deputy remains on critical incident leave.
The shooting occurred during a traffic stop at about 4:25 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 151 near Cascade that was related to a "multi-jurisdictional investigation," according to authorities.
During the stop, the male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle produced a handgun, according to authorities. Shots were fired, and the driver was killed, while the deputy was injured.
Officials have not released the name of the driver. Kennedy declined to do so Wednesday, directing questions to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is investigating the incident.
Kennedy said Tuesday night that this was the first officer involved shooting involving a Dubuque County Sheriff’s Deputy in “easily 30 years.”
Iowa DCI Assistant Director Don Schnitker said Wednesday he could not share any updates on the incident, including the names of those involved.
