Coralville police: Iowa City man stuffed pockets with $11,838 from Walmart safe during deposit

CORALVILLE — An Iowa City man was jailed Friday night on a charge of first-degree theft after stuffing his jacket pockets with $11,838 in cash while depositing money into a Walmart safe in Coralville, according to a Coralville Police Department criminal complaint.
At 8:08 p.m. Jan. 26, Brandon M. Jarvis, 18, was seen on CCTV footage handling and depositing money into a safe at the Walmart store at 2801 Commerce Dr. The complaint said Jarvis was seen folding a wad of cash and placing it into his left jacket pocket, then folding another wad and placing it into his right pocket. Still more cash was dispensed from the safe and stuffed into a jacket pocket.
Police said the total taken was $11,838.15.
Jarvis was released from the Johnson County Jail by noon Saturday.
First-degree theft is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
