IOWA CITY — A Coralville man was convicted by a jury this week on 28 charges of lascivious conduct and indecent contact with a child for over a year.
A Johnson County jury deliberated about five hours Monday before finding Robin A. Castillo Fuentes, 38, guilty of 14 charges of lascivious conduct with a minor, each a serious misdemeanor; 14 charges of indecent contact with a child, each an aggravated misdemeanor; and one count each of child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor, and assault, a simple misdemeanor.
The jurors were polled and each confirmed the verdict was unanimous.
Castillo Fuentes faces up to 44 years in prison. He also will have to comply with the sex offender registry requirements.
According to court documents, Castillo Fuentes admitted to inappropriate touching and kissing the girl, who was 12 when the incidents began, on multiple occasions from July 2018 through October 2019. Police said the child resisted Castillo Fuentes on multiple occasions, but in one incident he grabbed the girl’s arm, bruising it.
The girl, now 15, testified that Castillo Fuentes forced or persuaded her to disrobe and other times inappropriately touched her.
Her brother, who witnessed an incident, and their mother also testified.
Castillo Fuentes, who was aided by an interpreter at trial, took the stand and recanted his statements to police, saying he lied when they questioned him.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Justin Lightfoot ordered Castillo Fuentes to participate in a psychosexual interview. The 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services will complete an evaluation, as part of the presentencing report.
His sentencing is set for Nov. 19 in Johnson County District Court.
