CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man charged with attempted murder is accused of stabbing another man because the man was with the suspect’s ex-girlfriend, according to court documents.
Michael Alva Chevalier Jr., 33, also is charged with willful injury resulting in serious injury, going armed with intent, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime.
Chevalier reportedly stabbed Ian Funke, 37, near the entrance to the CeMar bike trail at 500 27th St. NE around midnight Thursday.
Funke was near the trail with Chevalier’s ex-girlfriend when Chevalier arrived as a passenger in a white Ford Explorer, according to the criminal complaint.
Funke told police Chevalier got out of the vehicle and confronted him while holding a 10-inch-long buck knife.
When Funke attempted to ride his bike away, Chevalier stabbed him in the back, through his backpack, coat, sweatshirt and T-shirt. The stab wound narrowly missed Funke’s lung, but caused substantial bleeding, according to court documents.
Police were called at 12:14 a.m. where they treated Funke and arranged transport to a hospital, according to a Cedar Rapids police news release.
Chevalier is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
