CEDAR RAPIDS — A shooting Friday night in the Cherry Hill neighborhood targeted the home of an off-duty police officer, authorities said Saturday.
The officer, who was not identified, was not injured and the shooting was under investigation. Police said multiple shots were fired, and rounds hit the home, garage and a take-home squad car.
“Evidence points to this being a targeted shooting toward a sworn peace officer. It was deliberate. It was an act of intimidation and violence and we will not tolerate it,” Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said in a statement. “We pursue all shots-fired incidents as serious, senseless actions and as such, receive our complete attention through the full legal process.”
Police said they received reports of the shooting in the westside neighborhood shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday. Anyone with tips or leads was encouraged to call the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5491 or anonymous tips may also be sent to Linn County Crime Stoppers at (800) 272-7463.
“This is the time for anyone with knowledge of this incident to come forward and help ensure this violence stops now,” Jerman said in his statement.
