Cedar Rapids man will serve 17 years in federal prison for child porn

Nov. 21, 2013 3:34 pm
A Cedar Rapids man was sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison Thursday for downloading and possessing child pornography.
Brian Lynch, 47, pleaded guilty to one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography in August. Lynch admitted during the plea hearing that between March 2010 and April 2013, he downloaded child pornography from the Internet and between November 2004 and April 2013, he possessed child pornography.
According to the plea agreement, Lynch, who ran a tutoring business, possessed more than 350 videos and more than 175 images of child pornography, including depictions of prepubescent children. He admitted to investigators that he had been viewing child pornography for 10 to 12 years. The earliest evidence found was on a floppy disk. Those files didn't contain images but contained file names describing child pornography, according to a sentencing memorandum.
Lynch will also be required to serve a 10-year term of supervised release and he must comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the DeWitt and Cedar Rapids police departments and the U.S. Marshals Service.
