CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids felon convicted of illegally possessing ammunition after he shot a Marion man eight times in 2021 will spend a decade in federal prison — the longest sentence allowed for the crime.
Anthony Fisher, 23, and two others broke in a Marion man’s home Feb. 16, 2021, “with the intent of stealing money and possibly marijuana,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Iowa. Fisher immediately shot the victim and the assailants fled. The victim survived.
The gun used was never found, but a federal jury in January convicted Fisher of possession of ammunition as a felon for the eight rounds striking the victim. Fisher had been convicted of a felony involving a gun in 2020.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Fisher to 120 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, which brings together law enforcement agencies to investigate — in this case, Marion police, the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dillan Edwards and Tony Morfitt.
