A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Friday on charges that he broke into the site of a future senior living community in Cedar Rapids and stole a golf simulator worth more than $10,000, and about $7,000 worth of tools.
Kevin Untiedt, 28, is charged with first-degree theft, second-degree theft and third-degree burglary. He’s also facing charges of possession of a firearm by a domestic abuse offender, person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, and possession of marijuana.
According to criminal complaints, Untiedt broke into Aura Independent Living, a senior living center owned by Nelson Construction and Development that is scheduled to open sometime this fall, according to the business’s website.
He was captured on surveillance video entering the business, at 3010 Center Point Road NE, on Saturday, Oct. 4, and stealing the tools and golf simulator. When he was arrested, on Friday, Oct. 10, he had a handgun in his possession, despite being convicted in 2022 of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, which prevented him from owning a gun. He also had marijuana in his possession and admitted to being a regular marijuana user, the complaints state.
Untiedt also has been charged with another count of third-degree burglary in relation to a September burglary in which he was seen on surveillance video entering a locked parking ramp for residents of NewBo Lofts, at 455 16th Ave. SE, and leaving with a backpack that looked like one belonging to a resident of the apartment building, according to a criminal complaint.
Untiedt was arrested Friday and had his first appearance in court for the various charges on Saturday. He is currently being held in the Linn County Jail on multiple bonds totaling $20,000.
