CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man is facing multiple assault charges from a series of attacks in the northwest quadrant of the city.
Daniel Doyen, 24, was arrested last week on charges of willful injury causing bodily harm and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon in relation to a March 13 assault of a 48-year-old man. On Tuesday, police filed additional charges — willful injury causing bodily harm and assault of an older individual — against Doyen, in relation to a March 10 assault of an 80-year-old woman.
In that incident, Doyen was caught on surveillance video approaching the 80-year-old woman from behind while she pushed a walker in the 1100 block of B Avenue NW. He punched her in the back of the head, causing her to fall to the ground and then hit her head several more times while she was on the ground, according to a criminal complaint.
The woman was injured, suffering bruises on her head and lips, and cuts and scrapes on her face.
Doyen was seen on surveillance video running back to 1153 C Avenue NW, where he lived at the time of the assault, the complaint states.
In the March 13 assault, the 48-year-old victim reported that Doyen punched him several times unprovoked at the corner of B Avenue and 10th Street NW. Doyen then took the man’s cane and used it to hit the man several times. The man ran away but Doyen chased him, continuing to hit him with his cane before eventually leaving the cane in the street and running away, according to a complaint.
The victim in that attack had a black eye, multiple cuts and scrapes, and had to get five staples on the top of his head.
Doyen had his first appearance over the weekend on the charges for the March 13 assault, and Wednesday for the March 10 assault charges. He was being held in the Linn County Jail on two cash-only bails totaling $32,000.
Police stated in a news release that they are investigating one other reported assault in the same area and time frame.
