Cedar Rapids man charged with domestic abuse after shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS -- A Cedar Rapids man was arrested just after midnight Thursday after police responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment on the 1300 block of Third Ave. SE.
Lafeyette Hampton, 24, is accused of nine charges: intimidation with a dangerous weapon - intent; interference with official acts- armed with firearm; domestic abuse assault; third or subsequent offense; possession of firearm or offensive weapon by domestic abuse offender; possession of firearm or offensive weapon by domestic abuse offender; use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime; assault causing bodily injury; possession of controlled substance- marijuana; person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons; and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a criminal complaint.
He’s currently being held in the Linn County Jail, according to a news release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
According to a criminal complaint, Hampton hit a woman, with whom he is in an intimate relationship, multiple times in the face and threw her to the ground. That caused swelling and discoloration in her eye and abrasions to her abdomen. He also assaulted another woman, who lives with the first woman, by hitting her multiple times and slamming her head into a door.
The first woman grabbed a gun to defend herself and shot a warning shot toward Hampton when he was outside the apartment, the complaint states. Hampton fired back. Police found multiple shell casings in the area.
Hampton was arrested after refusing to listen to police officers. While they were attempting to arrest him, police saw Hampton attempt to dispose of a firearm. He was also found to have marijuana and a grinder used to prepare marijuana on his person.
