Cedar Rapids Fire Department respond to ‘major’ 1st Avenue fire

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to a 'major fire” Monday that took place at around 3 p.m. at an apartment building, 4333 1st Ave.
According to a news release, CRFD was dispatched to a report of a closet on fire at the multistory building. Heavy black smoke coming from the lower unit in the front of the building when firefighters arrived.
Residents outside indicated that all occupants were out of the involved unit and the units on each side and above, according to the release.
Firefighters made entry into the involved apartment and knocked the fire down, verified there was no one inside, and began removing wall and ceiling material checking for extension. Another engine company pulled a second line and extinguished the fire on the exterior of the building. The surrounding units were checked for occupancy and fire extension, but firefighters found neither.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
