CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Police Department is investigating credit card skimming devices that were discovered this week on the registers at two Family Dollar locations, according to a news release from the department.
The skimmers were removed Tuesday from registers in the stores at the 901 First Ave. SW and 1531 32nd St. NE Family Dollar locations. Police said they don’t know yet what information, or how much information, was captured by the devices.
“Skimming devices work in a variety of ways, but most collect data from the magnetic strips on the back of credit, debit and other financial cards, and allow unauthorized users access to the owner/holder’s account information,” the release states.
Police are encouraging anyone who shopped at either Family Dollar location between Nov. 27 and Dec. 2 to check their accounts for fraudulent charges or unauthorized transactions, and to contact the police department at 319-286-5491 if unauthorized transactions are discovered.
