Cedar Rapids — Two people were arrested Monday after a car chase with police, according to a news release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Martavius Northern, 21, of Cedar Rapids was arrested on outstanding warrants for first-degree robbery and carrying weapons. Kaitlyn Whiting, 22, also of Cedar Rapids, was charged with eluding and driving while barred and cited with several traffic tickets.
About 2:30 p.m. Monday, police tried to stop a black Ford Edge being driven by Whiting in the 800 block of First Street SW. Whiting fled east and crossed the Eighth Avenue Bridge, police said. She made contact with another car, causing minor injuries to an occupant, and then stopped near the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Sixth Street SE, according to a criminal complaint and the news release.
Northern, who was a passenger in the Ford Edge, got out and tried to run but was caught, police said.
A warrant was issued Nov. 3 for Northern’s arrest after his pretrial release was revoked in a robbery case that has been pending since January 2022. The release was revoked because he had failed to report to the department of correctional services as required and because he tested positive for THC, according to court documents.
The robbery happened Jan. 1, 2022, when police say Northern entered a home with Dewayne Hunt, 21, of Cedar Rapids, and demanded marijuana from the residents. Hunt got into a fight with the victims of the robbery and was detained by them until police arrived. Northern was identified through witness interviews as also being part of the robbery, according to a criminal complaint. A jury trial for Northern in that case is scheduled for March 19.
Hunt has since been charged with attempted murder in a different incident.
