A Linn County Sheriff’s Deputy and a man who officials say may have been driving intoxicated were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries after the man crashed into the deputy’s vehicle Wednesday, according a press release from the sheriff’s office and a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol.
The man, Scott Rohwedder, 69, of Coralville, was driving a red Dodge Dakota on the wrong side of the road on Highway 100 near Edgewood Road at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.
The deputy spotted the Dodge driving westbound in the eastbound lane and started to chase him from the other side of the road, with lights and sirens activated. Eventually, the deputy got ahead of the Dodge and turned around in the median, getting in front of eastbound vehicles in order to slow down traffic.
Rohwedder collided head-on with the deputy’s SUV on the eastbound Highway 100 bridge over the Cedar River, and both were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office release.
An Iowa state patrol crash report states that Rohwedder “is suspected of being impaired by alcohol.” No criminal charges have been filed.
The crash is being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol. Other agencies that responded to the scene after the crash include the Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha police departments, the Palo Fire Department and Area Ambulance.
