There were 353 traffic deaths in Iowa in 2021, according to a preliminary figure from the state transportation department. That is the highest number of traffic fatalities in Iowa since 2017, when there were 402, and a nearly 6 percent increase over the previous year.

Wyoming, Iowa, woman died in head-on crash near Anamosa; Dyersville man injured

Authorities are investigating a fatality crash in rural Anamosa from Tuesday. One driver was killed and the other was injured in the nearly head-on crash on Iowa Highway 64.

A Cedar Rapids man was found passed out in a stolen vehicle at a Marion park before fleeing from officers and breaking into a Cedar Rapids home while armed with a rifle, according to a Linn County criminal complaint.

Investigators said Ryan Thieman, 49, of Marble Rock lost control at about 4:25 a.m. Dec. 21 while driving on southbound I-380 near mile marker 51.

A northbound SUV driver struck a northbound bicyclist on Linn Benton Road, according to a news release.

Police are still searching for the driver but found two juveniles who jumped from the vehicle and ran after the crash.

A public celebration of life is scheduled at Decorah High School at 5 p.m. Thursday for two teens who were killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday night.
