North Liberty fire crews rescued the driver of a sport utility vehicle that fell through the ice in a pond Thursday evening, the city said.
The Fire Department was called at 8:08 p.m. Thursday to a pond west of Goose Lake Circle where a vehicle had gone through the ice, with the driver still inside. Firefighters put on rescue suits and helped the driver escape from the vehicle.
He was removed from the pond within 15 minutes after the first responders arrived. He was transported out of the pond via an inflatable boat and then transferred to a Johnson County Ambulance, a news release states. The driver, whose condition was not released, was not identified.
The department did not say what events led to the SUV becoming partially submerged in the pond, but did warn people to be wary of ice on bodies of water even in the cold weather.
“The public is reminded that as temperatures fluctuate, ice can become weak and unstable. Please be cautious anytime you’re on or near frozen bodies of water, no matter the time of year,” the news release states.
