CEDAR RAPIDS
' Take part in a Veterans Day celebration at noon Wednesday near the Stewart Memorial Library on the Coe College campus. Join other veterans unfold and raise the flag while listening to the National Anthem. Coe College President Dave McInally will offer remarks.
' The Metro Veterans Council Veterans Day Program is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 50 Second Ave. Bridge. Master of Ceremonies is Cary J. Hahn and the guest speaker is Lt. Col. Tim Carey, Iowa Army National Guard. Music will be provided by the New Horizons Band and the Jefferson High School Meister Singers.
FAYETTE
Master Sgt. Kevin (KC) Robb, a Mount Auburn native, will be guest speaker at the 2015 Upper Iowa University Veterans Day program. President William R. Duffy II will welcome those attending the event, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Student Center ballrooms on the Fayette campus. Fayette American Legion Post 339 will present the colors. Aaron Calkins, UIU Student Government Association president, will serve as master of ceremonies.
IOWA CITY
' Take part in a Veterans Day Remembrance and Open House event on the main campus of the Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) at 1 p.m. today with a ceremony to celebrate the Marine Corps birthday followed by an Open House where ICVAHCS staff will showcase information on a variety of programs. The celebration will be held in room 3W101A on the 3rd floor near the 'C” elevator. The event is free and open to the public.
' Veterans For Peace Chapter No. 161 is sponsoring an Armistice Day Observance beginning at 10:45 a.m. at the Clinton Street entrance to Old Capitol. Bells will be rung at 11 a.m.
' The University of Iowa Veterans Association has placed roughly 5,500 American flags on the west lawn of the Pentacrest to individually honor veterans who are linked to the University of Iowa community. The flags will remain on display through Saturday.
' On Wednesday, the UIVA will sponsor the Veterans Day Reveille and Opening Ceremony. A bugler will play reveille at 8 a.m. while the UIVA raises a flag over the Old Capitol.
' At 5 p.m. Thursday, the University of Iowa will recognize members of the armed forces who have demonstrated exceptional service during the Hawkeye Distinguished Veterans Memorial in the Iowa Theater on the first floor of the Iowa Memorial Union.
MARION
Marion American Legion Post 298 invites all veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf wars, and veterans who served during the Cold War era, to attend the post's Veteran's Day Ceremony. The public also is invited. Plan on being at the Marion Post at 625 31st, Marion, by 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The program begins at 10:45 a.m. Post 298 wants to recognize each group for their service, along with getting a group picture of the veterans of each era, starting about 10 a.m. Vietnam Veterans also will be offered a belated, but warm welcome home, and a thank you for their service.
NORTH LIBERTY
' Penn Elementary will hold an assembly to honor veterans 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the new gymnasium. There will be a few honor guests who will talk with the fifth and sixth grade students from 3 to 3:30 p.m. The whole school will assemble in the first half-hour with kindergarten singing and parading.
' A Veterans Day Celebration is from 9:45 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage Christian School, 255 Hackberry St. The program features orchestra and choral performances, an Armed Forces Salute, presentation of the colors by the University of Iowa Air Force ROTC, and personal recognition of all veterans present at the event.
' The North Liberty American Legion Veterans Day Dinner is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at South Slope Community Center, 980 N. Front St. It is free to all veterans and spouse. Freewill donation for others.
RIVERSIDE
The Johnson County Military Affairs Veterans Day Banquet is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, 3184 Highway 22. The annual Hayek award is being presented to Tom Reinier. Cost is $40 to $50.
WEST BRANCH
At 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dr. Mark DePue will present 'The Life and Love of George Sizer” in the Figge Auditorium at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum. Admission to the presentation is free with paid museum admission.
