University of Iowa receives Special Olympics National Unified Champion School Banner
Nov. 22, 2021 6:00 am
Special Olympics Iowa has presented the University of Iowa with their Special Olympics National Unified Champion School Banner, making it one of the fewer than 6 percent of schools in the United States that can display this banner. The recognition comes after the University of Iowa met the 10 standards of excellence that focus on Special Olympics Unified Sports® (where students with and without disabilities train and compete as teammates), inclusive youth leadership, and whole-school engagement.
The University of Iowa is the first collegiate institution in Iowa and one of only 68 schools nationwide in 2021 to receive National Unified Champion Schools recognition. Special Olympics Iowa presented the banner last week in the Iowa Memorial Union’s second-floor ballroom.
Gold medals, which were awarded to powerlifting athletes, lie on a table at the Special Olympics Mid-Winter Tournament at the University of Iowa Field House in Iowa City on March 11, 2017. Athletes from across Iowa competed in basketball, cheerleading, gymnastics, and powerlifting. (The Gazette)
