The Machine Quilters Showcase and East Iowa Heirloom Quilters are coming together to host their annual events this week in Cedar Rapids.
Linda Hamson, show director for the Machine Quilters, based in Minnesota, said a more centrally located venue was sought for its 19th annual event, and Cedar Rapids was chosen. Hamson said the Machine Quilters and EIHQ decided to host their shows together.
'We felt like it would be a much better idea if we did it together. There will be something for everyone to enjoy,” said Suzanne Halley of EIHQ.
The shows are taking place in the same building, but each have a separate program and theme.
EIHQ's show, 'Through the Garden Gate,” features more than 250 quilts from local artisans. Many of the quilts, in addition to other crafted items, will be on sale throughout the event.
Some quilts will be professionally judged based on design and technique. Placement includes first through third place, honorable mention and other specialty awards.
The Machine Quilters will have its own award process and ceremony. It will place an emphasis on stitching and overall appearance, according to Hamson.
The Machine Quilter's theme is 'Optical Illusions”. Throughout the week, The Machine Quilters is hosting around 150 classes.
'Our goal is always education ... educating machine quilters and educating the public on the art of quilting,” Hamson said.
EIHQ also is hosting classes for attendees.
'We want people to see the various kinds of quilting and be inspired to pick it up,” Halley said.
Both shows will feature a vendor mall, where attendees can view and purchase crafted items.
The shows start today and run through Saturday at the Cedar Rapids Convention Center Complex. Admission is $10 per day or $25 for a multiday pass to the quilt shows and the vendor mall. Tickets are available at the entrance.
A ribbon cutting will open the event at 3 p.m. today.
