Special Olympics Iowa Mid-Winter Tournament returns to Iowa City

More than 1,100 Special Olympics Iowa athletes and Unified Sports partners, along with more than 400 volunteers, will converge on Iowa City this weekend for the Mid-Winter Tournament.
Team basketball, basketball skills, gymnastics, cheerleading, dance and powerlifting are on the agenda, with events taking place at the University of Iowa Field House, Iowa City West High School, Iowa City High and Pro-Fit Gym. A full schedule can be found at soiowa.org.
The Opening Ceremony will take place tonight at 6 p.m., along with a banquet and dance at the Coralville Marriott Exhibit Hall. Competition begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Special Olympics Iowa offers 23 Olympics-style sports year-round to more than 14,000 athletes and Unified Sports partners with intellectual disabilities, according to a media release.
