Veridian Credit Union will host mobile shred trucks at select branches in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City as part of its Community Shred Day events across Iowa and eastern Nebraska.
The no-contact events are scheduled for Veridian’s branch at 2810 Edgewood Rd. SW in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, and in the parking lot of the Hy-Vee store at 812 S. First Ave. in Iowa City on Oct. 2. Both events will be free and open for the public from 9 a.m. to noon to shred unwanted, sensitive documents and help protect identities from fraud.
“We host Community Shred Day to remind our community about the importance of shredding unwanted, sensitive documents and to provide an easy opportunity to do it,” said Ashtin Hotek, Veridian’s public relations strategist and Community Shred Day coordinator. “We're grateful that it's always well-attended."
Attendees are asked to arrive with documents in the cargo area of their vehicle and remain in their vehicle while event staff unload it and place it in shred bins. To ensure capacity for all who would like to attend, each event can accept no more than two 25-pound containers of documents per person. More tips on how to prepare for Community Shred Day are available at veridiancu.org/shred.
The shredded material will be recycled into commercial grade paper towels, toilet paper and other paper products. Since Veridian’s first Community Shred Day in 2009, an estimated 43,000 people have shredded more than 1 million pounds of documents. That equates to approximately 9,200 trees and 1,600 cubic yards of saved landfill space.
Documents are prepared for shredding at a past Veridian Community Shred Day event.
