Peace activist to speak in Iowa City

Kathy Kelly, an American peace activist, pacifist and coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, will speak March 18 in Iowa City about the human cost of war.

Kelly has traveled to Iraq 26 times, including stays in the combat zones during the early days of both U.S.-Iraq wars.

Her recent travel has focused on Afghanistan and Gaza, along with domestic protests against U.S. drone policy. She has been arrested more than 60 times at home and abroad, and has written of her experiences among targets of U.S. military bombardment and about inmates of American prisons

Kelly, who has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize, is the co-founder of Afghan Peace Volunteers. She is on the National Advisory Board of Veterans For Peace.

She will speak at 7 p.m. in the social hall of St. Patrick Catholic Church, 4330 St. Patrick's Dr., Iowa City. Admission is free.
