Writer, researcher dig into history of short-lived line
The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival has announced the 2022 Heroes: Willie Ray Fairley, Robert Feiereisen and Bridgette Robinson. Selected through a community nomination process, they will be honored at The Tribute to Heroes Dinner on June 17 and act as parade marshals in the Freedom Festival parade on June 25.

The second annual South District Diversity Market kicks off on Saturday from 1 to 7 p.m. in Pepperwood Plaza. The market is expanding from 30 vendors last year to 60 vendors this year, according to organizers, and will offer a wide range of products and services this year,

Sober CR, founded in 2022, is a group of those who choose not to drink, but still want to be involved in social events without having the social pressures of alcohol. After the group met several times, they decided to host an event to get together, dress up and celebrate.
Designed to help children effectively cope with loss in a safe, accepting environment, camp activities focus on the grieving process, encouraging interaction with others who have experienced similar losses.
The event will be held on June 11 at 10 a.m. Paddlers will start the race at Sturgis Ferry Park in Iowa City and will cross the finish line nine miles downriver at the Hills Campground in Hills.

UAY’s biggest fundraising event, the Festival of Flowers, seeks to raise $50,000 to support programming like Spark, as well as the Young Parent Program, health education and downtown Youth Center. The event is Thursday at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Reservations cost $50 and are available online.
