IOWA CITY — Local organizations in Johnson County are being honored in March for advancing the United Nations sustainable development goals during the annual “Night of 1,000 Dinners.”
The event is ticketed and will take place at 6 p.m. March 7 at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 2355 Oakdale Rd., Coralville.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and four local groups working to advance one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Good health and well-being.
This year’s honorees are:
- 4Cs of Johnson County, which strives to ensure that all children have a quality learning experience, enter school ready to succeed and realize their full potential.
- The Youth Crisis Stabilization program, a joint initiative by CommUnity Crisis Services and United Action for Youth that provides a therapeutic place for unhoused, trafficked or runaway youth to stabilize.
- Emma Goldman Clinic, which provides respectful, client-centered and participatory reproductive health care to people of all genders and sexual identities and in all life stages.
- The Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics, a free medical clinic offered in the Iowa City Community School District providing primary care, mental health care, and access to specialty care for underserved and uninsured children.
Night of 1,000 Dinners has been a Johnson County community event for more than 20 years. The name came from its original purpose — it was part of a national campaign for land mine clearance featuring fundraising dinners across the nation.
When the national campaign ended, members of the United Nations Association reframed the event as a celebration of International Women’s Day.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students and those with limited income through March 1. After March 1, tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for students and those with limited income.
Night of 1000 Dinners will feature an international buffet and entertainment from diverse cultures.
