Two Iowa City-based nonprofits are joining forces to turn an old farm into a new youth crisis stabilization center. Healing Prairie Farm is a collaboration between CommUnity Crisis Services and United Action for Youth which will provide youth in crisis a place to stay for up to 21 days. During their stay, kids will engage in counseling, therapeutic recreation with farm animals, and peer support groups.
“The care farm model allows kids to connect with nature and process emotions while working with animals on the farm,” says Emma Huntzinger, CommUnity’s communications manager. “It just makes sense. Working with farm animals, gardening, and looking out to that beautiful pasture, it’s a truly healing space.”
CommUnity purchased the property outside of Iowa City in August 2023. The program is made possible by funding from the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, Mental Health/Disability Services of the East Central Region, grants, and individual contributions.
Following extensive renovations to two farmhouses, the program is set for a soft open at the end of January. Once the farm begins accepting youth in crisis, it will be closed to the public for confidentiality and safety reasons.
There will, however, be one opportunity to see the farm, pet the animals, and learn more about this program. On Jan. 27 Healing Prairie Farm will open its doors to the public for a Hygge Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees will enjoy soup, cider, bonfires, and a variety of crafts to help welcome kids in crisis. Huntzinger says this will be the one and only chance for the public to see the farm, so bring your friends and family, all are welcome.
The farm currently has two horses, one llama, four goats, two bunnies, two potbelly pigs, and many chickens. For more information about the animals and how you can help visit builtbycommunity.org/friendofthefarm.
