Meals on Wheels needs more volunteers to deliver food, help
Aug. 18, 2021 4:00 pm
Homebound seniors across the Corridor depend on a daily hot meal from Meals on Wheels. The program needs 20 more volunteers to help deliver a nutritious meal and friendly well-check to help keep these older adults in their homes longer, more affordably and in better health. Each day the Meals on Wheels kitchen produces more than 900 meals to ensure that food-insecure adults in the area can eat.
In regular times, Meals on Wheels have had paid drivers who could fill in for the lack of volunteers, but the return of volunteers so far isn’t enough. Many have declined to come back because of COVID-19 health concerns, and healthy individuals are needed who are ready to jump in as soon as possible. The largest need for volunteers is on Mondays and Fridays.
Volunteers can sign up or inquire for more information at www.horizonsfamily.org/volunteer.
Fall Lunchbox Fundraiser
The return of Meals on Wheels’ annual Lunchbox Fundraiser is back and volunteers also are needed to help prepare gourmet sandwiches, pack meals, and deliver lunches to organizations in the area. Each $15 lunch helps feed two homebound seniors with a friendly well-check so they can stay home safely and confidently during this time of uncertainty. Help Horizons gain momentum with for this important program that continues to pivot and stops for no pandemic or natural disaster.
Ordering is live at www.horizonsfamily.org for pick up or delivery between Sept. 14-16 at 819 Fifth St. SE, Cedar Rapids.
