Marion mayor encourages participation in 21-day Equity Challenge

United Ways across Iowa have created a 21-Day Equity Challenge to raise awareness about the ways racism, discrimination and inequities affect the state. Marion Mayor Nick AbouAssaly has signed on and is encouraging community leaders, city employees and area residents to take the self-guided 21-Day Equity Challenge.

The online journey is designed to help participants develop a deeper understanding of important issues affecting Iowans, reflect upon their personal journey and identify actionable solutions that can create meaningful change over time.

“Diversity is a strength that should be valued celebrated,” AbouAssaly said. “This program offers each of us the opportunity to learn and increase our awareness of the issues around equity and inclusion. This is important as we work together to build a truly welcoming and inclusive community where all people are valued and treated equally.”

The program runs from Sept. 1-30 and is free and open to anyone to participate. It provides daily emails with links to recommended articles, videos, podcasts and more and explores topics like implicit bias, child care, mental health, housing disparities and discrimination, generational wealth and more.
