Iowa City’s annual downtown block party returns this Saturday
Free activities will be offered over 14 blocks of downtown from 4 to 11 p.m.

IOWA CITY — The annual Downtown Block party is taking over Iowa City on Saturday with live music, wrestling, roller-skating and plenty of other activities, food and drinks to try.
The event takes place from 4 to 11 p.m. over 14 blocks in downtown Iowa City. This is the Iowa City Downtown District’s sixth year hosting the event.
The various activities are free and geared toward attendees of all ages.
It’s also an opportunity for attendees 21 years and older to walk around downtown with drinks they’ve purchased from restaurants and bars. Tickets for cups can be purchased for $10 before the event online at the Downtown District’s website or for $15 in person Saturday.
The bars and restaurants downtown will be open, with many having tents set up outside their doors with quick-serve items and drinks.
There are four activities that individuals are asked to preregister for: a chess tournament, tug of war, basketball and sand volleyball. Preregistration is available on the Downtown District’s website.
Activities throughout the day include:
- Pedestrian Mall stage: musical performances from 5 to 10 p.m.
- Iowa Avenue side stage: drag story time, talent show, juggling, drag show and a fashion show from 4 to 9 p.m.
- Wrestling matches from 6 to 9 p.m. at the wrestling stage near the Englert Theatre
- Roller-skating with Iowa City Parks and Recreation from 4 to 8 p.m. by Yotopia
- Sand Volleyball games from 4 to 11 p.m. on Clinton Street
- Tennis and pickleball from 4 to 9 p.m. on Linn Street
- Various yard games from 4 to 11 p.m. on Iowa Avenue
- Three on three basketball from 4 to 11 p.m.
- Chess tournament from 5 to 8 p.m. in Black Hawk Mini Park
- Dueling pianos from 5 to 10 p.m. on Washington Street
- Silent Disco from 5 to 11 p.m. on Dubuque Street
