Iowa City Fire Department and American Red Cross team up to provide smoke alarms in South District
Distribution/setup day is Aug. 7, or register in advance; volunteers also needed to test and set up alarms
Jul. 26, 2021 6:00 am
The American Red Cross and the Iowa City Fire Department have teamed up for a one-day event that will provide free smoke alarms to residents of the South District Neighborhood.
Volunteers will gather on Saturday, Aug. 7, at Dream City/Kingdom Center Church, 611 Southgate Ave., to canvas the neighborhood, meet residents, and offer to test, replace, and install new smoke alarms at no charge.
If you are a South District Neighborhood resident and would like to preregister for an installation, please contact Deputy Fire Chief Eric Nurnberg at eric-nurnberg@iowa-city.org.
Volunteers needed for installations
Each smoke detector will be installed under the supervision of the Iowa City Fire Department with help from community partners like Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity and the South District Neighborhood Association. Help is needed to provide as many free installations as possible that day. If you would like to assist with this project, please sign up to volunteer at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4eaaac22a3f4c34-summer
Working smoke alarms save lives! The majority of fatalities and injuries in home fires occur where there is no smoke alarm, or where the smoke alarm is not operational. Each smoke alarm installed as part of this program will help give Iowa City families peace of mind that their homes and loved ones are protected for years to come.
This project is part of the Annual National Home Fire Safety Campaign of the American Red Cross. For more information, contact Nurnberg at (319) 356-5259 or eric-nurnberg@iowa-city.org.
