2 Mount Vernon High School students to perform at Tournament of Roses Parade on Saturday

MOUNT VERNON — Trystin Lashley and Ellie Barkalow, a junior and senior respectively at Mount Vernon High School, have been selected by Music for All to be a member of the Bands of America (BOA) Honor Band in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Parade taking place Saturday in Pasadena, Calif. Lashley and Barkalow were selected from among hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in this national honor band. Lashley is the child of Gennifer Lashley and Barkalow is the child of Renee Barkalow and the late Neil Barkalow. Their band director is Scott Weber.

The BOA Honor Band is a 300-piece national ensemble with winds, percussion, and a flag and dance team. According to the Bands of America website, Lashley and Barkalow are the only students from Iowa performing in the parade.

Lashley, who plays the tuba, and Barkalow, who plays the flute, are scheduled to spend a week in Southern California, where they will have rehearsals, performances at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and Disneyland, special activities and a featured appearance in the parade.

The 2022 Rose Parade begins at 10 a.m. Central time. The 5.5-mile parade will be televised through its broadcast partners. This will mark the fifth time Music for All’s Bands of America Honor Band has performed in the parade. Bands of America is a program of Music for All (MFA), one of the nation’s largest and most influential organizations in support of active music making. Music for All is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit educational organization.
