Win for every decent working person in America, Butler
Mike Hlas Apr. 5, 2010 10:56 am
It was Saturday night. I tossed it on Twitter, like so many other millions of scraps of useless mental paper are tossed there every day. But it got re-Tweeted more than anything, I think, that I've ever posted.
A duke is a member of nobility. A butler is a servant. This isn't a mere basketball game, it's class war. Here's to Duke getting served.
People don't like Duke, whether they should or not. Dynasties are both extremely popular and extremely unpopular. I watched a little of the Yankees-Red Sox game Sunday night, and can't stand the Yankees. But had it been Phillies-Braves, I wouldn't have watched a pitch.
But here's the thing: Duke is a great university, not a basketball factory. It's the Ivy League of the Southeast, or something like that. I've been there. When you're there, you know you're at a university. Cameron Indoor Stadium, which is a gym and definitely not a stadium, has nothing in common with the newer, huger arenas of Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin, for instance.
I couldn't find the gym/stadium when I was there, and it was staring me in the face. That's because I couldn't believe such an ordinary building would house the great Blue Devils.
But none of that matters. Duke is a dynasty. Butler will probably be the last of the mid-majors to ever get this far in the NCAAs thanks to the stupid expansion of the tourney that is forthcoming.
The Bulldogs are underdogs. But they must win tonight. They absolutely must.
