What's the nation's best college stadium anthem?
Aug. 18, 2011 4:51 am
I concede that your answer to the above headline will have a provincial twinge to it. AC/DC's "Back in Black" capitvates the Iowa football fan base as the Hawkeyes walk from the locker room to the playing surface at Kinnick Stadium. House of Pain's "Jump Around" is the favored choice at Wisconsin for its raucous atmosphere when played after the third quarter. At Iowa State, many Cyclone fans prefer "Sweet Caroline," which airs between quarters three and four at Jack Trice Stadium.
There are plenty of others that blare at specific times before, during or after a sporting event. Here are a few iconic songs that I've noticed at college stadiums or arenas the last few years:
- "Woke Up This Morning (Sopranos theme) by A3. Ohio State plays the song when the football players arrive at Ohio Stadium and walk the sidelines.
- "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. The song has become synonymous with Virginia Tech's entrance to the football field.
- "Where The Streets Have No Name" by U2. This is a nod to Indiana basketball, which uses the song in its pregame warmups.
- "Seven Nation Army" by White Stripes. Several schools play the song, but no school turns it into a TV highlight quite like Penn State.
There are tons of others out there. The pros are filled with songs for stadiums, but this is about college sports. Let me know what other songs coincide with certain stadiums, and I'll post them on this blog at a later date.
