Running back Brandon Wegher remains absent from Iowa's football camp and his status for 2010 is uncertain, according to sources.
After taking Sunday off, the Hawkeyes resumed fall camp this week, practicing in Kinnick Stadium on Tuesday. Wegher, a sophomore from Dakota Dunes, S.D., did not practice and remains in his hometown.
A decision on his return is unclear, but could come within the week. The fall semester at the University of Iowa begins Monday.
Wegher, who rushed for 641 yards and a freshman record eight TDs last fall, left Iowa's camp, which is based at the Coralville Marriott, on Aug. 7. Coach Kirk Ferentz said after Saturday's open scrimmage he spoke last week with Wegher.
The Hawkeyes have three sophomore running backs with Wegher, Adam Robinson and Jewel Hampton. Wegher didn't indicate the logjam at the position was the reason for his departure, Ferentz said.
“I guess all I can say is we all have periods in our lives where we reflect a little bit and think about things,” Ferentz said. “I think that's pretty much where he's at right now, sorting through some things. We're certainly hopeful that he chooses to come back. It's going to be his decision, either way.”
Ferentz was asked about the possibility of a redshirt for the 2010 season.
"Anything's possible (speaking on the redshirt possibility), but I hope it doesn't get that far," Ferentz said. "If he chooses not to play this year, he's got one available. That's the good news."
