Was Butler nearly coached by former Iowa assistant? Todd Lickliter no longer considered at Florida Gulf Couse
Mar. 30, 2011 9:52 am
Chad Walthall, Iowa's former top assistant under Todd Lickliter, had an opportunity to coach at Butler under Lickliter.
Walthall, who was released at Iowa after Lickliter was fired last March, now coaches Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead. He told the Fargo (N.D.) Forum, he was offered an assistant's job under Lickliter in 2001 but chose to stay at Dubuque's Loras College as basketball coach and athletics director at the time.
Walthall said current Butler Coach Brad Stevens led him on a facility tour before he declined the opportunity.
Speaking of Lickliter, the former Iowa coach apparently didn't make the cut for the final three at Florida Gulf Coast, according to Fort Myers News-Press. Lickliter has not coached since March 2010, when he was fired by Iowa.
Lickliter is among several former Iowa coaches who are mentioned by the Springfield (Mo.) ABC affiliate KSPR for the opening at Missouri State. Others mentioned include former Iowa player and current Purdue assistant Paul Lusk and former Iowa and current Indiana assistant Tim Buckley.
Former Iowa walk-on Keno Davis, son of former Iowa Coach Tom Davis and recently fired by Providence, also was mentioned. Former Iowa player Kevin Gamble, who served as Keno Davis' video operations director, also was let go by Providence.
Of course former Iowa Coach Steve Alford coached at Missouri State before coming to Iowa City in 1999.
