Video version: Pre-Orange Bowl
Marc Morehouse
Dec. 21, 2009 1:52 pm
Got a good five or so minutes with a few players today in Iowa City.
The big news, DE Adrian Clayborn is staying (not on video here, though). Also, CB Amari Spievey didn't show and was on the list. Don't know what that means.

The Iowa senior linebacker believes an Orange Bowl win would mean a lot to the program. He also talks about how bowl practices are just as hard as fall camp. Angerer isn't into the beach or amusements parks, "It's only fun if you win." He also talks about his friendship with fellow senior linebacker A.J. Edds. This led to discussion of Angerer's downtown days, something he flipped the switch and left behind, "Something needed to change."
The junior free safety talks about the triple option and some of the different things they do off the option and how Iowa's defenders will have to defend it. Sounds like Iowa went into full Georgia Tech mode Monday. Also, this kid went through the scariest thing a football player can go through -- a ride on a cart after a neck injury. He was OK with it, though. Can't worry about the danger.
The Iowa defensive end spent a lot of time at Satuday's Drake-Iowa game signing autographs. He also commented on his distinctive look and how he really can't go anywhere in Iowa City without being noticed. He does look a little bit like Santa Claus. Also, he talks about how his job changes against Georgia Tech's triple option and its cut block schemes. The big news isn't on this video, but Clayborn said he's coming back for his senior season next year.
The Iowa wide receiver talks about the emotions he felt after the Ohio State game, when he dropped a couple passes and heard it from fans. He said on the bus ride to the airport, he started getting nasty text messages from numbers he didn't recognize. "That added on to the emotion." He rebounded the next week and received an excellent ovation during senior day against Minnesota in the season finale. In the end, "it's just a game."
The Iowa quarterback talks Lady Gaga, who'll be performing at the Hawkeyes' hotel. She is on Stanzi's iPod. "I don't discriminate." On Georgia Tech, he said the Hawkeyes are learning what they might be doing in certain situations. On his ankle, "I've been back at practice . . . full go. That's not a problem anymore." Also, he talks about taking care of the football and what he went through with turnovers in his first season as the full-time starter.
The senior linebacker talks about the outside linebacker position at Iowa. Why is it such an anonymous position? "That's whay my job is to set up him (LB Pat Angerer) and (strong safety Tyler) Sash. They owe me dinner and I'm still waiting." The OLB covers wide receivers and it will always be that way. "That's the defense we run." Also, the one quote that sums up his four years, "A boy does what he wants to, a man does what he has to."
