UPDATE: Robert Gallery did not get the franchise tag with the Oakland Raiders -- will he head to Seattle?
Mike Hlas Feb. 24, 2011 1:30 pm
The deadline for NFL teams to place franchise tag on players has passed, and Robert Gallery did not get the Oakland Raiders'.
The Raiders designated linebacker Kamerion Wimbley.
So, 7-year veteran Gallery is about to become an unrestricted free agent.
The final four years of Gallery's Oakland contract have been voided. He made about $6 million last year.
Gallery has fought off injuries the last couple years, but has played well. Oakland was second in the NFL in rushing in 2010.
Oakland owner Al Davis fired head coach Tom Cable, who was firmly in Gallery's corner and endorsed a zone-blocking scheme that brought out Gallery's best NFL play. Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll promptly hired Cable to be his offensive line coach, leading some to believe Gallery might follow Cable to Seattle.
Gallery turns 31 in July.
