Twitter question: The Do and the Over Divisions
Marc Morehouse
Dec. 18, 2010 12:29 am
The Twitter question today was: Give me your names for the Big Ten divisions. Serious and snarky.
I set it up, you knock it down.
This is in light of the news that Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany acknowledged the conference will consider looking into dumping the "Legends" and "Leaders" for the names of the divisions.
My proposal: You win it, you name it. Northwestern wins it next year, it chooses the name for the division for that calendar year. Maybe the Randy Walker Division. That school wins, that school gets to celebrate it for a season. What if Ohio State wins it six consecutive times? Pretty sure Ohio State has six people it'd like to honor. Or maybe it goes scarlet?
It's not perfect, but it's workable. I also threw out the "Ro" and "Tel" divisions.
"Silos" and "Smokestacks"? I see that on a lot of highway signs in Big Ten country.
_________
Here's your answers:
First off, @tyharman sent an e-mail. He goes with Heartland and Great Lakes.
His e-mail:
Heartland
Iowa
Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Nebraska
Northwestern
Great Lakes
Illinois
Indiana
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue
Wisconsin
This uses geography in a general sense, instead of the more specific East and West. And yes, I know Michigan is The Great Lakes state, but the use of Heartland in place of Legends is because Iowa or Nebraska doesn't border one of the Great Lakes. My wife is from Michigan, and I lived up there for a while...they generally consider it the "midwest" or "heartland." All of the states represented in the Great Lakes division borders one of the...umm...Great Lakes.
Or just go with "Close Shave America-Barbasol" division and the "Velveeta-Rotel Explosive Diarrhea" if you want to go with sponsors (and because Jim Delaney seems to like hyphens).
Also, attached is my suggestion for the new logo (since we all know that's next on the chopping block. The graffiti is to represent the urban areas in the conference's geographic footprint while the color of green represents the pastures of the midwest (and oh yeah, dirty money). The use of Microsoft Paint represents the resourcefulness of the midwestern resident and because, you know, we're not as "sexy" (thanks Kirk) as the folks on the east or west coasts. I think this logo is an obvious upgrade over the proposed one!
_____
Last paragraph had me laughing!
______
@aimclemson "Close Shave" and "America."
@ericsundy "Serious" and "Snarky"
@MetsFanVI The Fast and the Furious
@bdpurdy11 Name 1 #BigTen div. after a good FB coach (JoePa, Woody, Bo, Stagg) and 1 after a good BB coach (Knight, Keady, McCracken)?
@nihiladrem Northwest and Southeast. Only problem is Wisconsin. PS Plains and Lakes is horrible don't let @HawkeyeZim say different.
@BenjaminJDawson There have been many people clamoring for "Rotel" and "Barbasol." Far better than what they did pick.
@spudhawk East- Rustbelt West- Cornbelt
@tc_cart Nothing goes better together than RoTel and Velveeta...even Legends and Leaders
@backseatfan Hogs/Cows ; Corn/ Soybeans but really just call eat East- West and who cares if one state is off.
@tmorganjr "Steve" and "Johnny"
@pfac51 @marcmorehouse Land / Lakes #big10
@IllinoisHawkeye Serious and snarky ;) -- I opened myself to that one, didn't I?
@demmert4 I feel like Wolf Brand Chili needs to be involved somehow. Maybe the Wolf-Barabsol trophy for BTN advertiser of the year?
@China_Wall East and West. North and South. Three Yards and Cloud of Dust. Anything that Delany doesn't come up with.
@TheJYWrinkle My idea was inspired by Leaders & Legends. I say it might as well be Epic & Fail.
@derek_edwardss Black and blue or north and south
@c_starfish3 Great Plains and Great Lakes
@jtlinder These Six and Those Six.
@rwendt40 Check out #RejectedBigTenDivisionNames there were a ton of good ones going earlier this week
@jtlinder My favorite one I saw the other day: "Michigan and Friends" and "Ohio State and Friends."
@NemeToad Us and them for division names
@sparksm86 Lakes/Plains, East/West, I think Geography was the way to go. The consultants Delany pays are out of touch and idiots.
@adolan7 haha loves RT @spudhawk: Rustbelt & Cornbelt as the new Big 10 division names
@TMac5783 Snarky: Midwest and Mid-West / Point Special and Iron City (pick the midwest microbreweries of your choice)
@HawkeyeZim It has to be Lakes and Plains. Sounds too good.
@China_Wall Nothing says toughness like great lakes and great plains #sarcasmfont
@schoulte2010 East and West
@SethCaliRoberts "Face" and "Palm."
@JerryVonSprcken Tastes Great and Less Filling -- This is a win!!!
@HawkeyeZim @nihiladrem Don't listen to this guy. He's a Pac12 homer. Still talks about how great the 9 game conf sched is
@kaugie01 Law and Order. Strength and Speed. Cause and Effect. Playstation and Nintendo
@China_Wall Midwest west and Midwest east. Or, Midwest and Not-so-much-Midwest
@MetsFanVI Saccharomyces Cerevisiae and Saccharomyces Pastorianus. That leaves Brettanomyces available for future expansion. -- Yeast for beer.
@jlglynn How about the Unicorns and Rainbows divisions?
@ICHawkeye Serious: Lakes & Plains. Snarky: Culture and Agriculture. You pick which is which.
@bdattilo Academics are important' and 'MATH IS HARD' divisions. -- Finals week.
@stephenmally Well when the approval rating for your division names are 15 points lower than Congress - you've got a real problem...
@Pot_KettleBlack I'd pick Rotel and velveeta over ro and tel
@jlglynn Look, we all know Delaney is all about the money. Why not sell the division rights? The Verizon and Lucas Oil Divisions.
@TMac5783 Snarky: Mighty Mississippi /Great Lakes
@OC_Hawkeye (Mike) Hall & (Tom) Oates -- This one had me LOLing. It's the Big Ten Network's Mike Hall and the Wisconsin State Journal's Tom Oates. Excellent!
@IowaCubsSoxFan How about Effyoubigxii and Shutitsec?
@oompahead The players and the haters. -- But only if there's a Playa Haters Ball, a la Chappelle Show.
@JoeFavia Gotta get as far away from leaders and legends. 'frontrunners' and 'icons'
@diggerg56 I still like the Hatfields & the McCoys. Lakes & Plains sort of works for me.
@Jdubb006 "Shake" and "Bake" or "Alex P. Keaton" and "Marty McFly." -- Wait, didn't Alex shun Ohio State for a small liberal arts school?
@oompahead How about "1895" and "1896" years of first meeting and inception, the fives and sixes would tie to history and sound cool
@KEGreene1 Cloud & dust, black & blue
@HawkeyeSean As I said earlier, before that @schadjoe fellow, it's gotta be Black and Blue, but anything is better than Laggards & Losers
@ASchultejans great lakes and great plains
@hawkeyegrant I still like Black and Blue. It's short, simple, and describes Big 10 football.
@ASchultejans How about hlas and hamilton division names??
@joselopezjr I would have no issue with the Schembechler & Hayes divisions. -- The right answer.
@paul_henricksen I've wanted the @Melanie_Collins and @CharissaT divisions for a while now and play for the @BTNMikeHall Trophy -- Just kidding Big Ten Network. Don't do this, seriously. Let's forget about this one. Let's not give them any ideas.
@DataManBlake I am partial to Black and Blue as Don Doxsie suggested from the #qctimes.
@Blisser #BigTen suggestions: Hatfields and McCoys (Sorry...had to).
@neyfam2000 6 for one--half dozen the other
@ShelbyStoolman I'm a fan of Ro and Tel. And that's not just because my employer makes diced tomatoes and green chiles - I promise. -- Totally unbiased.
@Sanctioning_Agt East & West. The name implies we can't count, we don't need to be that strong in geography either.
@tmorganjr B10 should take a page from ACC (Atlantic and Coastal) and go with "Midwestern" and "Western Middle."
@ReleaseThePun American & National
@bungs1 I can't decide between "6+6" and "=10" or "No hills here" and "Really no hills here". -- The hills . . . magnificent!!!
@MdmeAlbertine East and West is simple and intuitive.
@jerrymills Or Rotel and Velveeta. Maybe they should sell names...
@evegoe What were you favorites? Rose and Citrus... would be mine for bowl games in Pasadena and Orlando.
@GenXGeoff Snarky: Leaders and Land Grants (would require some reconfiguration and might not split evenly) or Beef and Pork.
GenXGeoff Sci-Fi: Legacy and Next Generation (a stretch, yes, but no more so than the current names).
@GenXGeoff Serious: Not sure, but what's currently in place is very bad and they've had a while to figure this out.
@Cruser88 Larry and Daryl. -- Touchdown.
@BMWeston I really like the "lakes" and "heartland" divisions
