WR Marvin McNutt talks about his transformation from QB to WR. His 40 time went down and his vertical (42 inches and was 38) went up. He was a 4.7 40 and now he's a 4.5. "It just took a lot of mental will, telling yourself you can do it." Also, McNutt brushed through the NFL question as well as he could. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to be here next year."
LB Troy Johnson went through a little bit of a stinger issue in the fourth quarter against Wisconsin, but he said he's practicing today and will be ready for Michigan State. He also says Iowa's LBs will be ready and will improve after last week. "I think we're confident in the guys we have. It's a lot of young guys, but we're confident."
OT Markus Zusevics believes the "spike it or timeout" question is being totally overblown. "Absolutely, how many plays could've changed that game," he said. "There were so many different things that could've changed it. To question a call that would've changed maybe one second for a Hail Mary from midfield, I think people are dwelling on that a little bit much."
RB Adam Robinson explains the "spike vs. timeout" situation. "People from the outside don't know what was going on, how things were like," he said. "A timeout was called. It was the coaches' decision and we're going to respect that." He added that Kirk Ferentz took responsibility for the timeout.
Senior OL Julian Vandervelde knows what's at stake Saturday for the Hawkeyes, but he doesn't want the team to go into a panic mode. He also talks about Iowa's last-second win over MSU last season and how it applies absolutely zero to this season.
OLB Tyler Nielsen laughed at the question, "Are you guys out of linebackers." Here's a little of what he said, "We may get Tarp back this week and we'll see where it goes. We'll have linebackers out there when the time comes."
Punter Ryan Donahue says here he wants the blame for the botched field goal attempt in the second quarter against Wisconsin. He fielded a snap that was a little high and panicked, he said. Instead of a 30-yard FG attempt, Donahue was tackled for a 4-yard loss.
No quick fixes for special teams, but Donahue likes the players in the lineup.
QB Ricky Stanzi says the only way to stop thinking about a frustrating finish like the Hawkeyes had Saturday is to stop thinking about it. I also asked how and threw out, jokingly, a quart of vodka as a way of making the pain go away. Stanzi said, "That's Russian, I don't do that stuff."
Just say nyet.
