Today's lesson for all of you: There are no jinxes in sports
Mike Hlas Jan. 25, 2011 2:28 pm
I noted on Twitter today that teams with quarterbacks who played at Cal-Berkeley are 0-9 in Super Bowls.
That includes five losses when reserve Gale Gilbert was on the sideline for Buffalo (four times) and San Diego (once).
It means nothing, of course. It's just a weird stat to note given that Cal alum Aaron Rodgers is Green Bay's starting quarterback. But I got this response:
uncool jinx Mike, sounds as bad as a SI cover jinx
Ah yes, the Sports Illustrated cover jinx. You know, the one that completely stopped Michael Jordan from having a successful NBA career, he being on SI's cover 49 times and all.
There are no jinxes. I stepped on the crack of a sidewalk intentionally the other day. Nothing bad happened because of it. I walked under a ladder last summer just to tempt fate. I saw a neighbor's black cat out and about and made sure it crossed my path.
OK, no former Cal QB has been on the roster of a Super Bowl-winner. That I know of, anyhow. It means nothing. No quarterback named Ben Roethlisberger has ever been on the roster of a Super Bowl-loser. That doesn't mean it won't happen on Feb. 6.
All of you -- ALL OF YOU -- have to get past jinxes and superstitions. You're holding the rest of us back, and we need you all to get on board with science and logic if we're going to turn this planet into something resembling Utopia.
And something else. Saturday Night Live hasn't done a "Bill Swerski's Superfans" sketch with the constant repetition of the phrase "Da Bears" since 1993. Chris Farley died in 1997.
So if you ever see or hear someone call the Chicago Bears "Da Bears" again, have them arrested.
