-- I don't have this confirmed, but it's starting to seep out that redshirt freshman Riley Reiff will either start or see some time at guard today in place of junior Julian Vandervelde. Don't know this to be true. HawkeyeNation.com has Twittered this. I'll check around the pressbox and see if I can get a confirm.
Given last week's performance against Arkansas State, this isn't a major surprise. Vandervelde had a tough day against the Red Wolves. Reiff started three games when Bryan Bulaga went to the bench with his thyroid illness and more than held his own. Vandervelde had surgery on a torn pectoral tendon early this summer and missed all of fall camp. While he was out, Reiff was tried at guard. Coach Kirk Ferentz ended that experiment about halfway through camp, electing to have Reiff, who's just in his second year as an O-lineman, concentrate on one spot.
In this scenario, the guards would be Reiff and Dace Richardson, two relative newbies to the position.
-- The last word on TE Tony Moeaki is that he's a go. He's missed the last three games with a sprained ankle. He warmed up the last two weeks and appeared to be getting close to a return. TE Allen Reisner has been slowed this week with a thigh bruise. I don't think it's something that will cause him to sit, but keep an eye out.
-- OL Andy Kuempel is wearing No. 90 today, so that might be somewhat of a tip on Reisner's health.
-- QB Ricky Stanzi is out right now warming up. He's got a big-time knee brace on his left knee. This has been there for a week or two.
-- Michigan has made it to the field. California quarterback Tate Forcier hasn't balled up in the fetal because of the cold. He's wearing long sleeves, has one of those hand-warmer thingies strapped around his waist and some ginormous headphones covering a white Michigan touk.
-- Michigan isn't wearing all white tonight. The Wolverines are in gold pants, as usual.
-- No Dave Witvoet, Iowa fans, the Big Ten official you believe is Michigan-biased. Todd Geerlings is the referee. It won't take long for you to get mad at him, I'm sure.
-- Rose, Sugar, Cap One and Champs Sports (basically, the Florida Citrus daily double) are in attendance today. I always enjoy it when the Rose Bowl shows. Anything Rose Bowl I just dig it.
-- Ken O'Keefe leads Iowa skill players onto the field.
-- Trent Mossbrucker from 43, not pretty. Left hash, Murray from 37 is good. Iowa kickers are working out to in. Looks like 45 is the max.
-- DJK is in the house. On time, as far as I know. That was one of the "bumps" Ferentz referred to last week.
-- Reisner is in warmups. Moeaki in warmups. Team session in a few.
-- I don't know if he plays, but DB/special teams guy Chris Rowell is dressed for the first time this year, I think.
-- CB Shaun Prater is dressed and looks fine. He missed last week with a hyperextended knee.
-- TEAM: Riley Reiff starts for Vandervelde. Prater is in. Moeaki in.
-- Come here for our chat. Enjoy the game. It should be fun. Kinnick at night is something to see.
This is Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker's golf cart. Pretty exciting stuff, huh?
