HawkeyeReport.com's Tom Kakert sat in with me for today's Sports Desk, sponsored by Dave Wright Subaru. You can check it out at this link.
The topic was Saturday's scrimmage. In my mind, no way you walk away from that with any definitive answers. It was the team's eighth straight day of practice, its first scrimmage and, for the most part, its first day of tackling.
Now, you can see some possible problem areas and where Iowa needs to quickly lock in on a body.
The defensive line lost more than it won Saturday, but how much do you read into it? Senior DE Lebron Daniel didn't play (sidelined with an unspecified injury). Sophomore DT Dominic Alvis (unspecified injury) also sat out. He's listed as a possible starter.
Freshman Darian Cooper looked promising even though he was in shorts. NCAA rules dictate that players build-up to full-padded contact for five days before being allowed to play along the line of scrimmage.
It's also important to point out Iowa had two former D-linemen start in the NFL on Saturday night (Tampa Bay's Adrian Clayborn and Tennessee's Karl Klug) and another record a sack (Minnesota's Christian Ballard).
Roster defaults have clustered on the D-line in recent classes. If you go back to 2007 (the group that is fifth-year seniors), Iowa has had eight players leave D-line. That includes offensive tackle Riley Reiff, who'll be a third-year starter this fall.
Jason Semmes transferred to Miami (Ohio). Tyler Harrell transferred to Louisville. Cody Hundertmark, Martin Hopkins, Donovan Johnson and Anthony Ferguson are no longer in football.
Scott Covert switched to fullback for the Hawkeyes this spring.
So, all hands on deck on the D-line.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz mentioned Iowa will have a giant scrimmage Friday night at Kinnick (closed to the public and media).
Expect No. 2 QB to be figured out and maybe No. 2 RB.
Tom and I threw out some names of true freshmen we think have a shot to see the field this fall.
He mentioned Torrey Campbell (already No. 2 CB) and RB Mika'il McCall. I went with K Marshall Koehn (strongest leg, IMO) and TE Ray Hamilton.
I think Hamilton looks like every movie bully from the '80s, from Ice Man in "Top Gun" to Johnny Lawrence from "Karate Kid" to however many bully roles Adam Baldwin played in the '80s and '90s.
I highly recommend the seat backs.
This is Adam Baldwin. You might remember him from such roles as the bully in 'My Bodyguard' or the bully in 'Full Metal Jacket.'
This is freshman tight end Ray Hamilton. He's looking for a role on the Iowa football team.
