KCRG's John Sears and I continue our discussion on Iowa's depth chart with the wide receivers and tight ends. Click here for The Sports Desk (sponsored by Jim Miller Subaru, for which we are very grateful).
I don't see Iowa wide receiver extending beyond four -- Marvin McNutt, Keenan Davis, Kevonte Martin-Manley and Don Shumpert.
McNutt will have a chance to solidify himself as a high draft pick in 2012 with big numbers in his senior season. He's 6-4(ish), 215 pounds and has a 42-inch vertical and runs a 4.5 40. All that and he'll have three solid seasons of film on his resume. McNutt is the total package with a great future ahead of him.
This is Davis' time. He's been in the backseat while McNutt and Derrell Johnson-Koulianos drove Iowa wide receiver the last two seasons. Davis is 6-3, 215 and has all the tools. He led all receivers in spring max outs with a hang clean of 370 pounds. Davis hasn't had a clean shot at touches for two reasons, McNutt and DJK. This year, he's the No. 2. This is Davis' time.
Shumpert is a 6-3, 185-pounder from St. Louis. He dropped the redshirt last season and played on a few special teams units. He set records in the 400 meters at Hazelwood East. He's a long strider who compares to McNutt in body type.
Martin-Manley is a 6-0, 190-pounder from Pontiac, Mich. He redshirted last season. He's the one of the four who isn't 6-3, but he comes with a Big Ten-ready build. In the spring photos on the official site, KMM has been shown running with the No. 1s and making a dynamic play here and there.
Last season, Don Nordmann was receiver No. 5 and he caught two passes. In '09, Davis was receiver No. 5 with four catches. Four is the high-water mark for No. 5 in the last five seasons. Don't expect this go much more than four.
Steven Staggs and Blake Haluska will compete with Jordan Cotton for the 5.
Tight end is easier, with senior Brad Herman the clear No. 1. Sophomore C.J. Fedorowicz has made strides and seems to be settling in at No. 2 with Zach Derby not far behind. Iowa has three incoming freshmen at tight end -- Ray Hamilton, Jake Duzey and Henry Krieger-Coble.
Bur for 2011, it will be hard for any freshman to find room between Herman, Fiedorowicz and Derby.
