1. Malloy update
The Sioux City Journal reported today that Heelan RB/WR Michael Malloy has set a plea-taking date of Sept. 12 in the Dakota District Court.
Malloy, who committed to Iowa earlier this summer, is expected to change his plea from not guilty to either guilty or no contest.
Malloy pleaded not guilty Aug. 15 to charges of obstructing a peace officer, second-degree criminal trespass, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without headlights
Malloy rushed for 1,668 yards and 29 touchdowns last season for Heelan. He is currently serving a 20-day suspension from all school actitivites for violating the school's conduct code policy.
Will he retain his Iowa offer? Hard to say. Malloy, who's only other scholarship offer is South Dakota, called Iowa after the incident. Iowa can't comment per NCAA rules.
Iowa City West's Charles Roger is a similar athlete at 6-1 and around 185. He's on an unofficial visit this weekend. Maybe he gets the offer?
2. Johnson County I-Club breakfast menu
Sometimes, noteworthy sneaks out with the oatmeal. This morning, the freshmen were introduced.
Freshman Damon Bullock introduced as an RB/WR. WR? DE John Raymon did not attend. He had homesickness during camp, but has hung in there. He's got a good-looking DE body, but who knows. I have no idea what to think on this one.
3. The Frosh watch
I don't know how this is going to turn out. The number probably will grow even after tomorrow.
Most def tomorrow
Mika'il McCall
Jordan Canzeri
Ray Hamilton
Marcus Collins
Torrey Campbell
Quinton Alston
If not tomorrow, soon
Nico Law
Jacob Hillyer
Damon Bullock
4. Tempo
Tech has "Fastest 60 minutes in football" on the cover of its media guide.
Will they bring that tomorrow? If the Golden Eagles push tempo, this might give us a glimpse in how Iowa's defense will look this year. No Ohio State, no Wisconsin. No sure-fire future NFL D-linemen (Mike Daniels and Broderick Binns will get shots). Not a lot of proven depth and a lot of new starters.
Norm Parker is in the mix. This is going to be interesting.
The pylons, it's what everyone is reaching for. (Gazette file)
