The press conference of our lives: Iowa Corn Growers and the Cy-Hawk Trophy
Mike Hlas Aug. 23, 2011 1:42 pm
This is the day the world stands still. At 2 p.m., the Iowa Corn Growers Association (with representatives from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University on hand) tells us the fate of the new and not-improved Cy-Hawk Trophy.
Post your comments about the results of the press conference here, and I'll do likewise.
Did I say this is the day the world stands still. Apparently an East Coast earthquake has people questioning that.
KCRG's Beth Malicki introduced the Ch. 9.2 coverage by calling the trophy "infamous." That was being kind.
"It only took three or four days for people to realize" something had to be done about the situation, she said.
The trophy has been junked, and the new one will be chosen by the fans from several concepts. This means one important thing: Do not send me your trophy suggestions. Please. Do NOT send me your trophy suggestions. Go to the proper channels.
It is written here. The trophy WILL have Nile Kinnick and Jack Trice. The contest or whatever they're calling it is fine, but if you want to have something classy, you'll go with two icons every fan from both schools can appreciate.
Iowa's Rick Klatt said "Perhaps we missed the mark." Uh, yes, perhaps.
Klatt and Iowa State's Steve Malchow are stressing that Iowa Corn got way too much of the blame. I'll buy that. I'll also remember Iowa Corn is writing the checks to the two schools' athletic departments, and those departments need and love those checks.
OK, that's all from me on this. It was a wonderful five days. Thank you, Iowa Corn, Iowa State and Iowa for providing this rich vein of comedy.
