The 'On line' series takes a look at redshirt freshmen

As the 2010 recruiting class continues to unfold, it's becoming clear that it's an outstanding class.
Running back Marcus Coker and linebacker James Morris made their debut in 2010, winning key starting roles on offense and defense. Tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, linebackers Anthony Hitchens and Christian Kirksey, wide receiver Don Shumpert and defensive backs Tanner Miller and B.J. Lowery made their debuts in 2010.
All eight might have a starting position or will definitely have a say in 2011.
That's not all there was to the 2010 class. After spring practice, DT Carl Davis held a spot on the depth chart. Wide receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley will have a shot at No. 2 or 3 touches next season. The closer it gets to Tennessee Tech, you have to think A.J. Derby will have something football to do this fall. And there's punter Jonny Mullings, who might emerge with the most important job of the bunch.
We'll spend the next 12 days looking at the 12 redshirt freshmen who'll put on their uniform and have it mean something this fall. On day 13, we'll take a look at the redshirt walk-ons. There are one or two or maybe three who could be on a scholarship track. (It's kind of like finding an undrafted free agent in the NFL.)
The series is called "On line," as in coming on line. It shows that Iowa has a certain percentage (maybe as much as 60 percent) of every recruiting class that is in a developmental mode for their first couple seasons at Iowa. You don't hear much about them, but the more success they have behind the scenes -- be it scout team, weight room, special teams -- the healthier the Hawkeyes' roster is and the brighter the future.
All these players are on a different path. Check out where they might be and let us know where you think they might be headed.
(BTW, the 2010 class has lost just two, so this is the part where you find wood to knock on.)
