Teams We Hate, Er, Dislike: Odious Teams in the NCAA tournament
Mike Hlas Mar. 17, 2011 1:58 am
Did that headline grab your attention?
Slate.com has yearly feature before the NCAA tourney called "Teams We Hate." This year's is right here. Seven teams got singled out, including Penn State.
Here's part of what Josh Levin wrote about the Nittany Lions:
On offense, the Penn Staters resemble Hoosiers extras with chronic fatigue syndrome. To compensate for their inability to shoot, pass, and dribble, the maladroit Lions impose awfulness on their opponents, plodding along at a pre-shot-clock-era pace that makes their games a slog to the merciful final buzzer. Penn State's 36-33 victory over Wisconsin in the Big Ten tournament should have cemented its position as the one team in America that's best kept away from television viewers-say, in the NIT. Instead, this slow-motion cavalcade of missed jumpers was the "quality win" that pushed the execrable Lions into the NCAAs.
That's beautiful.
Duke and Kansas get ripped, but so do Akron and Princeton.
I think "hate" is a strong word. Teams That Disgust Us, or Teams That Make Us Nauseous might tone it down a bit.
Of the 64 teams still alive in this tourney, I don't hate any of them. Because I'm in the so-called mainstream media (Ha!) and can't have any such biases. (Double Ha!)
If I could, though, I'd start with Kentucky and end with Louisville, or maybe vice versa. And I'm not big at all on Connecticut. Duke, North Carolina and Kansas are three easy targets, so I'll let them go.
For balance, I need to pick a mid-major to insult. So I'll take UC-Santa Barbara, just because I'm jealous of anyone who lives in that richy-rich, beautiful city on the Pacific.
How about you? Who of the Field of 64 do you hate, and why? Well, not hate. That's not a nice term. Who disgusts you or makes you nauseuous?
I do not like them
