Two freshmen gone -- DL Tyler Harrell and OL Matt Murphy will transfer at the end of the semester, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday.
Still recruiting -- That leads to the recruiting question. Yes, Iowa has 20 commitments for the 2010 recruiting class. Ferentz acknowledged that the Hawkeyes are still recruiting, with as many as three scholarships possibilities still out there.
Bowl percentages -- Iowa AD Gary Barta said Iowa is hearing from the Fiesta, Orange and Capital One bowls. No, he wasn't willing to put a percentage on where the Hawkeyes would end up.
The Notre Dame question -- "If they had or hadn't (contacted Kirk Ferentz or any of his people), I think it'd be inappropriate for me to comment on that." So, maybe Notre Dame contacted Ferentz. I thought that was the most interesting comment, except for maybe, "I'm not a vagabond coach. I like it where I'm at. I've enjoyed everyday, well, not every day but most days, I don't see things changing here." Barta said he hasn't been contacted by Notre Dame. He said he wouldn't expect to, though. It's sort of an unwritten courtesy, not a legal thingie.
Opening statement from Tuesday's press conference. Of course, the Iowa coach believes the Hawkeyes are BCS bowl worthy.
This is the Notre Dame question. You can see it for yourself.
The Iowa coach talks about the NFL question, which is being asked about OL Bryan Bulaga, DE Adrian Clayborn and DB Amari Spievey. He also talks about the process, finding out where the players might really fit in the NFL draft.
The Iowa coach talks here about Penn State and how there's no bad bowl. He might ask Dan Gable and Hayden Fry to come to a bowl game with the Hawkeyes. He also talks about how Iowa's fans become the world's biggest bowl chip when it comes to the bowl poker table.
The Iowa coach was asked about Iowa's top plays of '09. Yeah, there were a few to choose from. About a minute and a half into this clip, Ferentz calls for patience for Iowa basketball and coach Todd Lickliter. The Hawkeyes are 2-5 so far this season.
The Iowa coach will never be a talking head on TV analyst shows. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if his next move after Iowa wouldn't be a line coach at a D3 college somewhere in New England, which is something he kind of hinted at in the "walk off" portion of the press conference. He also talks about the Heisman Trophy and how, yeah, Shonn Greene would probably be sitting pretty for it with the year he had in 2008.
